In an effort to conserve PPE, Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta (Childrens) knew they needed to implement a creative and innovative process forconserving their supply of N95 masks. Kristen Charbonnet Cranmer MSN, RN, CPNP, PCNS-BC, NEA-BC (Class of 2001), Childrens Director of Case Management, was appointed by the Chief Nursing and Hospital Operations Officer to lead a team made up of clinicians, industrial hygienists, infec-tious disease physicians, and environmental care experts to develop and implement a disinfection process to conserve N95 masks. Using the ever-changing guidance available at the time, Kristen and her team developed a process for disinfection using ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) delivered by Tru-D machines, which under normal circumstances, are used to disinfect environmental surfaces, equipment, and rooms. In April 2020, Childrens officially opened its N95 Disinfection Unit and since implementation, Childrens has disinfected over 80,000 N95 masks and conserved nearly 26,000 N95 masks. Kristen credits St. Scholastica Academy (and Mrs. Pierce and Mr. Arbo) for providing her with a strong foundation for math and science, which has helped her become a transformational leader in pediatric healthcare.'
