I paired the material with Google classroom, made videos, and incorpo-rated reading Scripture and articles, but I think the best assignment I gave was simply to watch the live-streamed Mass with Fr. Mike Schmitz and have students respond to related reflection questions, says theology teacher Nageeha ZaghloulYazbeck (93).For me a huge challenge was easily being distracted by my family and surroundings. It was a hard balance to know when to work and when to relax. It was very challenging to communicate emotions through emails and Zoom, Hummel says. I am most proud of the girls ability to adjust. They were just thrown into this, as we all were, but I never had one complaint, just compliance and smiling faces, says science teacherDr. Annie Whitaker. Our girls continued to receive a great education. They actually had mean-ingful tasks to do.Perhaps some of the greatest challenges were the physical separation of SSAs close-knit social community, along with the disappointment of canceled sports seasons and milestone events like prom, senior Class Night, Junior Pinning, and awards assemblies. Many of these activities moved to virtual live-streamed platforms.Graduation was postponed until July and faced restrictive limits on the permitted number of guests, but the Class of 2020 celebrated their achievement nonetheless withexcitement and pride. Students, faculty, and staff alike even found some blessings in the midst of the challenges. From a seniors perspective, we were forced to slow down and I had much more time to spend with my family as opposed to the fast-paced fall semester where I would barely see them for dinner, Ravain says.It was a blessing in disguise to get this time together with my family before I leave for college.Even in an unprecedented crisis setting that no one could have fully anticipated, our pillars of prayer, work, study, and community proved a solid foundation for the virtual schools success. ~ Aimee Boudreaux MacIver 96'
